On Sunday morning, Russian forces assassinated Brent Renaud, a documentary filmmaker from the United States, in the flashpoint town of Irpin, west of Kyiv. He was the first journalist to be killed in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Juan Arredondo, a photographer from the United States, was hurt and is being treated in a hospital.

Brent Renaud: Who Was He?
Brent Renaud was a 50-year-old award-winning filmmaker and journalist from the United States.
To name a few, he covered the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as political unrest in northern Africa, cartel violence in Mexico, and the 2010 Haiti disaster. When he was shot and killed, he was covering Russia’s war in Ukraine.
His work has featured in The New York Times, The Boston Globe, HBO, NBC, and AI Jazeera, among others. He received numerous awards over his career, including the Peabody and DuPont medals.
Brent Renaud’s Cause of Death
According to Ukrainian law enforcement, he was fatally shot by Russian troops in Ukraine on Sunday morning, March 13. He took a blow to the neck.
Renaud was covering the Russian invasion of Ukraine alongside fellow journalist Juan Arredondo, who was also injured in the attack. While on their way to capture people leaving Kyiv, the two were shot at in Irpin, a suburb just north of Kyiv.
