Don began his football career with the Cleveland Browns in 1951 and 1952, the Baltimore Colts in 1953 and 1956, and the Washington Redskins in 1957. He began his coaching career in 1960 with the Detroit Lions and stayed with them until 1962. In 1963, he became the coach of the Baltimore Colts. The squad won 71 games, lost 23, and tied four times during his tenure as coach.


His renown, however, stems from his coaching career with the Miami Dolphins, which he began in 1970. He was the first coach in NFL history to win 100 games in ten seasons.
