O’Dell competed in major junior hockey for four seasons (2007–2011) in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), scoring 100 goals and dishing out 107 assists for 207 points in 198 games (2007-2011). O’Dell was chosen to represent Club Canada at the 2008 IIHF World U18 Championships, where they took home the gold. He was chosen to represent his group at the OHL All-Star Game in 2009–2010.
With the Chicago Wolves, O’Dell made his professional debut in the 2009–10 American Hockey League season. O’Dell signed a rookie contract with the Atlanta Thrashers on June 1 of that year.
