Jerry Stackhouse is the nephew of former Wake Forest University guard Craig Dawson and the younger brother of former CBA player and former forward Tony Dawson of the Sacramento Kings and Boston Celtics. When Stackhouse was a sophomore in high school, he was a star performer.

Alongside future college classmate Jeff McInnis, Stackhouse led Oak Hill Academy to an undefeated season during his final year. He was the McDonald’s All-American Game MVP and was selected for the Parade All-America team twice. He and Rasheed Wallace were recognized as the top athletes at the Nike Camp in 1992.
