Jerry Stackhouse is the nephew of former Wake Forest University guard Craig Dawson and the younger brother of former CBA player and former forward Tony Dawson of the Sacramento Kings and Boston Celtics. When Stackhouse was a sophomore in high school, he was a star performer.
Alongside future college classmate Jeff McInnis, Stackhouse led Oak Hill Academy to an undefeated season during his final year. He was the McDonald’s All-American Game MVP and was selected for the Parade All-America team twice. He and Rasheed Wallace were recognized as the top athletes at the Nike Camp in 1992. Stackhouse is regarded by some as the best prep athlete to emerge from North Carolina since Michael Jordan.

Jerry Stackhouse was once referred to as the “Next Jordan” since they were both North Carolina players who finished third in the draft, listed at 6’6″, were physically similar, and shared similarities in acrobatic games. Sam Perkins and Rasheed Wallace in 1984 and 1995, respectively, each had a bigger power forward selected immediately behind them at number four.

Stackhouse was one of six players traded to the Washington Wizards in the summer of 2002, along with Richard Hamilton. Christian Laettner and the Washington Wizards acquired Stackhouse in the summer of 2004 in exchange for a first-round selection pick (Devin Harris). Stackhouse was transferred to the Memphis Grizzlies on July 8, 2009, as part of a four-team deal. Stackhouse agreed to terms with the Miami Heat on October 23, 2010. He signed a one-year contract with the Nets on July 11, 2012.
On June 29, 2015, Stackhouse was appointed an assistant coach by the Toronto Raptors. He was appointed the head coach of the Raptors 905, the team’s NBA Development League affiliate, on September 9, 2016. After agreeing to a six-year contract, Stackhouse was appointed head coach of the Vanderbilt Commodores on April 5, 2019.
