Johnny Manziel was compared to quarterbacks like Brett Favre, Michael Vick, and Drew Brees from an early age, and his parents, coaches, and sportswriters referred to him as a folk hero.

Career of High School

Manziel played four years on his high school team, the first of which he spent as a receiver on the varsity squad.

But Johnny had began his sophomore season as a receiver before switching to quarterback for the fourth game. Manziel amassed 1,164 throwing yards, 806 rushing yards, and 408 receiving yards for a total of 28 receiving touchdowns.

After that, he ran 531 times for 4,045 yards and 77 touchdowns while also catching 30 passes for 582 yards and an additional five scores.

Johnny Manziel was taken aback by 2010, which brought him the Mr. Texas Football honor and made him the only quarterback in the country to be selected a Parade All-American in his senior year.

He also received the football Senior Athlete of the Year award from the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA).

Manziel, who played alongside Marcus Mariota of Oregon, was the player who dominated the national stage in the game in 2010.

He was selected for the National Underclassmen Combine’s (NUC) All-World Game in 2010, when he rushed for more than 100 yards and completed more than 200 passes.

Ends of  high school

Manziel was widely sought after by other colleges as soon as he graduated from high school, including Texas A&M, Baylor, Colorado State, Iowa State, Louisiana Tech, Oregon, Rice, Stanford, Tulsa, and Wyoming.

Manziel originally intended to play for Oregon, but the influence of the Aggies’ then-quarterbacks coach Tom Rossley caused him to change his mind.

There were speculations that the Texas team wanted Manziel to play defensive back; however, Mack Brown, the Texas coach, later disputed these claims.

Career of College Life

After enrolling at Texas A&M in 2011 on a full scholarship, Manziel started his undergraduate career. He was coached by Mike Sherman at the time, but he redshirted for 2011 and didn’t play, so he joined a travel team.

He started playing in 2012 and worked with Kevin Sumlin from 2012 to 2013.

Debut Game

When Ryan Tannehill left for the National Football League following the 2011 season, Manziel was selected to take over at quarterback because of his successful spring and fall workouts.

Johnny Manziel beat out Matt Joeckel and Jameill Showers for the job before the season started.

In a similar vein, his first game was slated to take place against Louisiana Tech on Thursday, August 30, 2012, in Shreveport, Louisiana.

However, due to Hurricane Isaac reaching the Louisiana shore two days prior to game time, it was postponed until October 13.

As a result, he had to make his Kyle Field debut as a redshirt freshman against the Florida Gators in front of a home crowd.

Before the National Recruitment

In his latter years, Manziel surpassed Archie Manning’s 43-year-old record of 540 total offensive yards against a single opponent, surpassing Arkansas’ 557 total offensive yards.

Likewise, Johnny surpassed his own record for total offense by 576 yards during a game against No. 24 Louisiana Tech. He became the only player in SEC history to have two games with 500+ total offense in a single season as a result.

Since his eighth game with Texas, when he had three throwing touchdowns, two rushing scores, plus one series in the second half, Manziel has appeared on the national Heisman Watch list.

Launch in the National Scene

Johnny contributed 345 of Texas A&M’s 418 yards of offense, including two passing touchdowns, to the Aggies’ 29-24 victory over No. 1 Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Following it, he was considered the early favorite to win the Heisman Trophy by most national watch lists.

Manziel then experienced knee pain on November 24 while playing in front of his own fans against the Missouri Tigers.

Johnny Manziel therefore showed up in a knee brace for his subsequent series. Johnny  finished the game with 439 yards of total offense, three throwing touchdowns, and two rushing touchdowns.

He passed recent Heisman Trophy winners Tim Tebow and Cam Newton at that precise moment. With 4,600 yards, he set another SEC single-season record for offensive output.

He finished the year as just the sixth player in NCAA history and the first freshman to pass for 3,000 yards and carry for 1,000. He was the recipient of the SEC Freshman of the Year Award as well as the National Freshman of the Year Award for college football, to give two examples.

On top of that, he advanced as the first freshman to take home both the Heisman Trophy on December 8 and the Davey O’Brien Award on December 6.

2013 Season

Before the 2013 season began, media questioned Manziel’s skill, and a story that he had signed autographs for cash in January 2013 arose.

Anyhow, Texas A&M started the 2013 campaign with a No. 6 Coaches Poll rating.

Johnny was then barred from playing in the first half of the game versus Rice. But in the 49-42 defeat, Johnny sliced a school record 464 yards and five touchdowns against No. 1 Alabama.

His main target throughout the game was Mike Evans, who finished with seven receptions for a school-record 279 yards.

Manziel also threw for 446 yards but three interceptions while recording a single-game career-high five touchdowns.

guiding Texas to a 51-41 victory over Mississippi State. In the interim, he finished fifth in the 2013 Heisman Trophy voting.

Baseball Career

At Tivy High School, Manziel played middle; but, in order to graduate early, he had to give it up and concentrate on football.

Even yet, his love for baseball was undiminished; as a result, he spoke with the Texas A&M baseball coaches, but once he began to play quarterback, he was unable to devote the necessary time.

Despite this, the San Diego Padres selected him as a shortstop in the 28th round (837th overall) of the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft.

Professional Football Career

Manziel registered for the 2014 NFL Draft in January. On January 15, 2014, he was selected in the first round (top five).

After that, Manziel opted to throw on March 27, 2014, at Texas A&M’s Pro Day rather than the NFL Combine, and he completed 64 of his 66 passes to six different receivers.

Barry Switzer, a former NFL head coach, had said, “I don’t like his (Manziel’s) antics,” prior to the draft. He seems like a cocky little prick to me. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again.

The scouting report for Manziel was changed from “undraftable” to “rare competitor,” nevertheless.

Johnny Manziel was selected by the Cleveland Browns as the 22nd overall choice on draft day, making him the shortest quarterback selected before Kyler Murray in 2019.

Cleveland Browns

On August 24, as the season was coming to a close, the NFL penalized Johnny Manziel $12,000 for making the hand motion known as “flipping the bird” after a preseason loss to the Washington Redskins.

As a result, Brian Hoyer, the starting quarterback for the first game of the regular season, took his spot.

The fourth quarter of the Browns’ November 30 game against the Buffalo Bills will also see them lose 26-10. At the time, Johnny completed 5 of 8 passes for 63 yards, and on a 10-yard scramble, he scored his first NFL touchdown.

Manziel started for the Browns in Week 15 against the Cincinnati Bengals, completing 10 of 18 passes for 80 yards and two interceptions for a passer rating of 27.3.

Similar to that, the game ended with a 30-0 loss to the Browns after Manziel took three sacks.

Manziel injured his hamstring in the final two minutes of a game against the Carolina Panthers on December 21.

Hoyer immediately took his position, and the Browns lost 17-13 once more. In the season finale, Manziel wasn’t included in the match against the Baltimore Ravens.

By the end of the season, Johnny had 18 of 35 passes for 176 yards and two interceptions and run nine times for 29 yards and one touchdown. Hence, He was not taken seriously by anyone and was questioned about his gameplay.

2015 Season

As of August 27, Manziel was not included for the rest of the preseason due to his right elbow’s persistent soreness. Then, on September 13, as starting QB Josh McCown was hurt in the first half, Manziel appeared for the New York Jets game.

Johnny Manziel bagged his first career passing touchdown with a 54-yard pass to WR Travis Benjamin during the action.

However, the match concluded with a 31-10 loss as Manziel committed three errors in the second half. Afterward, the match against the 2014 Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota and the Tennessee Titans resulted as a 28–14 triumph.

He has completed 8 of 15 passes for 172 yards and 2 touchdowns to Travis Benjamin.

Manziel again appeared in the game after McCown suffered a shoulder injury in the fourth quarter of a Week 7 game against the St. Louis Rams.

The very game came as a 24-6 loss as Johnny had 4 of 5 throws for 27 yards. Similarly, in the 8 Week game, he re-appeared against the Arizona Cardinals when McCown suffered another injury.

Following up in Week 10, the game against the Pittsburgh Steelers went brilliantly for Manziel as he had 33 of 45 passes for 372 yards and one score. However, the Browns ended up with a 30-9 loss.

Games as a Starting Quarterback

On November 12, Manziel was kept in the starting quarterback position, which was dismissed after seeing a Texas party over the ‘bye’ week. Nonetheless, he reinstated the post after the Bengals trounced the Davis-led Browns 37–3.

Following it, the match against the San Francisco 49ers came as a 24-10 triumph, and Johnny recorded 21 of 31 throws for 270 yards and one touchdown thus, ending the losing streak of the Browns.

As for the end game of the season, Johnny was rumored to suffer a concussion and so couldn’t attend. However, reports circulated that he was in Las Vegas instead of Cleveland with the club that weekend.

2016 Season

NFL Network’s Ian Rappaport and ESPN’s Pat McManamon stated to dismiss Manziel out of the league in early February, and following it, Johnny was probed for the domestic violence issue.

Therefore, the Browns released him on March 11, violating their “expectations for our athletes on and off the field.”

Hamilton Tiger Cats

Canadian Football League’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced on March 31, 2017, that they had kept Johnny on the negotiating list.

Right then, it had been a year since Manziel was absent of the football field; consequently, he was to go through a battery of physical and medical exams from August 23 to 24, 2017.

After the workout, Manziel’s representative sought for the contract with the Tiger-Cats; hence, they had 10 days to swap his rights or renounce his rights.

In the agreement, CFL enlarged the 10 days time frame to “facilitate a process of review for the player.”

As in September, Manziel talked out with the CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie and concluded not to let Johnny play with any CFL team for the year 2017 but may play for the 2018 season if he met certain requirements.

CFL Negotiation

On December 8, CFL announced to let Johnny participate in the league, and the Tiger-Cats had time until January 7 to either sign a contract with him or exchange his rights.

Manziel’s agent, Eric Burkhardt, urged to have them paid in the same realm as Tiger-Cats’ quarterback Zach Collaros was last season, i.e., $500,000 to $550,000.

Therewith, on February 14,  Johnny was to play in The Spring League, a non-paying developmental league, for the 2018 season.

Thus, it concluded on May 19, 2018, when Johnny and Tiger-Cats agreed to a two-year contract.

Montreal Alouettes

On July 22, 2018, the Tiger-Cats traded Johnny Manziel and offensive linemen Tony Washington and Landon Rice to the Montreal Alouettes for defensive lineman Jamaal Westerman and wide receiver Chris Williams.

The Alouettes announced on July 31 that for the debut encounter in the team, Manziel would face his previous team Tiger-Cats.

Furthermore, on the first CFL start of Johnny’s, he threw four interceptions, including two by Jumal Rolle in the first start, which ended in a 50–11 loss. Thus, for the second start, he improved by not throwing an interception on August 11.

In the third quarter, Johnny received a strong blow to the head from Ottawa’s Jonathan Rose, thanks to which he finished in the concussion protocol; thus, missing out on his practices.

Manziel was added to the injured list, and therefore, Pipkin started a total of 4 games. In Week 15, Johnny returned to take place where they ended up losing 31–14 to the Blue Bombers.

By the end of the season, Manziel had appeared in eight games as he tallied 106 of 165 pass attempts (64.2 percent ) for 1,290 yards with five touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Although Manziel had a hard time throughout the first half of the season, he gradually improved till the conclusion, integrating into CFL standards.

Dismissed from the CFL

Manziel was looking forward to the rivalry with Antonio Pipkin and Vernon Adams for the starting spot in 2019.

However, he was released by Montreal on February 27 as per the demands by the CFL league. According to the CFL journalist Justin Dunk, the CFL broke the link with Johnny as he missed numerous of his sessions and submit to weekly lithium tests.

Memphis Express

Following the incidents, Memphis Express inked an agreement with Manziel to replace the injured quarterback Zach Mettenberger and the struggling Christian Hackenberg.

On March 16, 2019, he had joined the Alliance of American Football through the waiver system. The San Antonio Commanders signed him under the league’s regional allocation process.

Moreover, Johnny made his debut for the squad against the Birmingham Iron on March 24, where he played in the second and third quarters as a backup to Brandon Silvers.

As for his game record, he had 48 yards, along with running for 20 yards as the Express won 31–25.

On March 30, Manziel suffered a concussion in an attempt to throw an interception during the game against the Orlando Apollos. Three days later, the AAF ceased football activities.

 Retirement Life

In September 2020, in an interview with TMZ in the talks of the NFL, Manziel announced his retirement, stating: “I think football is a little bit beyond me…

Football for me is not in the forefront of my mind.”

On June 29, 2012,

at the age of 19, Manziel was arrested for disorderly behavior, failure to present identity, and possession of a fictitious driver’s license.

According to the police records, incident happened a late night as Manziel was escorting his friend him but ended up with a confrontation in the street after another man started taunting him.

Although no evidence was found that stated he took the money, however, he was suspended for the first half of the season opener against Rice University due to a “inadvertent violation” of NCAA rules.

Therefore, Johnny failed to report to the Browns for the game hence, covering it up by the news of concussion.

The Year 2016

After the tons of hanging news and controversies, Manziel’s marketing agency, LRMR, and his agent, Erik Burkhardt, called it quits on January 6.

Following it, on February 6, the  Dallas Police Department reopened the domestic violence case of Johnny with his ex-girlfriend, Colleen Crowley.

They read the case to go by Manziel, forcing her into a car, pulling her by the hair, and threatening to kill both her and himself.

Hence, Dallas grand jury announced misdemeanor assault charges for the incident on April 24. On April 19, agent Drew Rosenhaus terminated Manziel as a client, while Nike ended its sponsorship with Manziel.

Furthermore, Manziel’s attorney, Bob Hinton, accidentally sent a message to the Associated Press, which stated the defense in the domestic violence case alongside a $1,000 bill from The Gas Pipe, a drug paraphernalia store.

The same day on June 24, Manziel’s father, Paul, told ESPN: “He’s a druggie. It’s not a secret that he’s a druggie. Hopefully, he doesn’t die before he comes to his senses. I mean, I hate to say it, but I hope he goes to jail.

I mean, that would be the best place for him. I’m carrying out my duties, so I’ll continue. He will be interred if I have to.
