Jonathan William Coachman is an American sports interviewer, analyst and professional wrestling personality. Coachman is also known as “The Coach”. He was born on August 12 1972, in McPherson, Kansas. The Coach is the pre-show host for pay-per-views at WWE.

 

Coachman was the interim General Manager of Raw. He used to be a college basketball player and football play-by-play announcer. He played for two basketball championships at McPherson High School in McPherson, Kansas. Coachman then moved to play for McPherson College. He also participated in theatre, served as the sports editor for the school newspaper, and did play-by-play and colour commentary for the local football and basketball radio broadcasts while at McPherson College.

Coachman was once a sports reporter and anchor at KAKE in Wichita, Kansas. He often attended the Youngstown State Penguins basketball games while living in Newton Falls, Ohio.

Jonathan also starred in many instructional videos used for technical education classrooms of middle schools and high schools. In May 1999, he worked for local Kansas City news station KMBC-TV. He was a correspondent for Larry King Live’s coverage of Owen Hart’s death at KMBC-TV.

Jonathan started his World Wrestling Federation (WWF) career as an interviewer, commentator, and presenter in 1999. He also did occasional touches of humour teasing segments with Dwayne Douglas Johnson, The Rock.

On August 24, 2003, Coachman made a heel turn against Shane McMahon at SummerSlam. This earned The Coach a role as an assistant to Eric Bischoff. Eric Bischoff was the General Manager of RAW on WWE. The Coach and Al Snow, a fellow WWE Heat announcer, in a storyline feud against the Raw announce team joined against the Raw announce team, Jerry Lawler and Jim Ross.

In 2004, he was granted a singles victory on pay-per-view at Backlash. He used to host the 2004 and 2005 Raw Diva Searches. Coachman gained his own column in the now-defunct Raw Magazine which he called Coach Corner. Coachman also gained his own webcast on WWE.com, Coachcast. In 2005, Coachman became the third member to the Raw broadcast team and signed a multi-year contract with WWE.

In October 2005, Coachman became a lead announcer on Raw after Jim Ross was fired. The coach was replaced by Joey Styles. Joey Styles is a former ECW announcer.

Coachman left WWE in June 2008 after he decided not to renew his contract. He returned to WWE in 2016. The coach re-signed a contract with WWE and joined the RAW commentary team. He left the RAW commentary team on September 10, 2018, and became the new pre-show panel host for pay-per-views.

Coachman also called on College Sports Television, a cable and satellite network owned by CBS and college basketball for CN8. He served as the part-time play-by-play announcer for the WNBA’s New York Liberty on the MSG Network. He also served as the studio host for New York Knicks games and hosted the weekly MSG program MSG, NY.
