McGruder scored 11.1 points per game and averaged 11.1 points per game. In his junior season, McGruder increased his scoring to 15.8 points per game and was named second-team All-Big 12.

Rodney got a preseason All-Big 12 selection as a senior in 2012-13. He was also selected a top-30 finalist for the Naismith College Player of the Year on February 27, 2013.

During his senior year, McGruder led the Wildcats to a Big XII championship.

Professional Development

Season 2013-14

After going unprotected in the 2013 NBA draft, McGruder spent the summer with the Orlando Magic in the Orlando Summer League and the Charlotte Bobcats in the Las Vegas Summer League.

On September 27, 2013, the athletic McGruder inked a contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder. However, he was later waived by the Thunder on October 25, 2013.

McGruder signed with Atomerm, SE of Hungary in November 2013 for the 2013–14 season. In 29 league games with Atomerm, he averaged 14.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game.

Season 2014-15

McGruder joined the Golden State Warriors for the 2014 NBA Summer League in July 2014. On September 29, 2014, he signed with the Boston Celtics. However, he was later dismissed by the Celtics on October 27, 2014.

The Maine Red Claws signed him as an associate player four days later. He was released by the Red Claws on March 26, 2015, after appearing in 26 games. The Sioux Falls Skyforce purchased him four days later.
