James E. and Barbara T. Bowman welcomed Valerie June into the world on June 14, 1956 in Shiraz, Iran. Her father, a geneticist and pathologist, oversaw a children’s hospital in Shiraz in 1956. Her parents are of European and American heritage, and when she was five years old, her family was compelled to move to London.

As a child, Jarrett spoke mostly Persian, French, and English. Her mother was one of the four activists who established the Erikson Institute in 1966 with the goal of educating teachers and other professionals who work with young children about child development.

Jarrett received his high school diploma from Northfield Mount Hermon in 1974 and his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Stanford University in 1978. As if that weren’t enough, she attended the University of Michigan Law School to earn her Juris Doctor.
